Scabies is a contagious disease which spreads from person to person through prolonged physical contact for minutes, sharing beds, towels and fomites. It is caused by a mite which after finding the host, resides within the skin and causes itching.
A patient suffering from Scabies experiences itching all over the body, that is more intense at night. Later, multiple skin lesions appear in softer parts of the body like finger-webs, inner side of wrists and elbows, external genitals (private parts) and breasts (in females). In small children, the lesions also appear on palms, soles, trunk, scalp and armpits.
As this disease is contagious and usually more than one family members are affected simultaneously, it is important to treat all family members simultaneously and correctly. Sometimes mild itching persists for few more days even after correct treatment. For correct diagnosis and treatment, it is recommended to visit nearest skin specialist/dermatologist.
